Khulna Tigers is a franchise team in Bangladesh Premier League. In this article, we discuss in detail about Khulna Tigers Team, Squad, identity & its performance history. This team was based in the Khulna Division of Bangladesh. The home ground of the team is Sher-e Bangla National Cricket Stadium & Zohar Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium. The Khulna division is famous due to the tigers therefore team owner changes their name to tigers.
Khulna Tigers Team Franchise History
In 2012 when BCB launch the Bangladesh Premier League, they selects 6 teams from different divisions of Bangladesh. In the first edition, the Khulna Tigers team was known as Khulna Royal Bengal. Orion Group Limited is the first owner of the Khulna team franchise. The owner of the team was Gemcon Sports Limited Company.
Later in the 2019 edition, MindTree Limited and Premier Limited Bank consider the new sponsors of the Khulna Tigers. When the Khulna Royal Team changed into Khulna Tigers Muhammdullah Riyad led the team as captain. In the 2nd season due to financial & spot-fixing issues, the real team did not come back to BPL.
In the third season, all teams were re-established and came into the playground to make the new journey in the Bangladesh Premier League. Bangladesh Cricket Board announce the schedule for all teams. You can check the list of all matches 7 save it in a PDF file.
Khulna Tigers Team Performance Overview
Every team tries to do their best for their team. But in the 2nd season due to spot-fixing, the Bangladesh Cricket Council terminate all the team. In the season 2015, all teams came with a new identity. Performance during all seasons of the Khulna team is given in detail below.
2011 to 2012 Season
In the first season of BPL Shakib- Al Hassan led the team as captain. Khulna Royal Bengals made a strong position on their side. They start the tournament well with the outstanding player Dwayne Smith & Herschelle Gibbs. In the captaincy of Shakib they success to get the position in the playoffs. They qualify for the final match. In the final, they face Dhaka Gladiators but they could not get the success in the final match. They finish the season with a good place in the points table.
2012 to 2013 Season
The second season was not better for the team because they could not perform better. Shahriar led the team as their captain. They lost most of their matches from 12. They finish the edition at the bottom place. It was the most destroyed season for the Khulna team. They could not keep themselves stable their self under the other captain.
2016 t0 2017 Season
In the third season after the change in ownership & management of Khulna Royal Bengals. They also get the new name Khulna Titans and make a new team with outstanding players. Khulna team add nine foreign players to their team and all the players were the best in cricket. They make the position in the play-off stage but after defeat from Rajshahi Kings and Dhaka Dynamites failed to qualify for the final.
They ended the season with 2nd position in the points table. Junaid Khan gets the award for the leading wicket-taker and Muhammadullah takes the award for leading runs. One of the best things for the team was that they were known best for the bowling attack & fielding.
2017 to 2018 Season
Khulna team signed the Pakistani players Shadab Khan & wicket-keeper Sarfraz Ahmad based on domestic commitments. They signed players for their team 8 local and 2 foreign players. They start the tournament with a strong turn & Imran Ali took 5 wickets. Khulna titans get a position in the group stage to qualify for the playoffs. In the eliminator round against Rangpur Riders, they can’t play well. The Rangpur Riders team give the target of 126 runs to the titans but they did not play well & lost the match.
2018 to 2019 Season
Khulna team retained 4 players from their team. In the place of 4, they include Dawid Malan and Ali Khan as a new player in the squad. They signed Jahurul Islam in their first pick in the draft and signed many new players for the team. Lasith Malanga took the most wickets for the titan’s team and get an award for the highest wicket-takers. They play well but could not qualify for the play-off stage.
2019 to 2020 Season
This time they signed Shane Watson as the team captain. This season due to interest issues between Bangladesh Cricket Board & all franchises BCB changed some rules. BCB decide to take over the charge of the current BPL. Bangladesh Cricket Council decided to run the tournament by the board itself. In this season they get the selection for the final. They play against the Dhaka team but face a loss in the final and end the tournament as the runner-up team.
2021 to 2022 Season
After the covid-19 all sports run their tournament & BPL decided to hold the 8th season in 2022. In this season once again Khulna team came with their new name Khulna Tigers. The owner of the team decides to give a new name that represents the bravery & Spirit of the team. At the start of the tournament they success to win 3 matches and qualified for the play-off stage. In the eliminator, they lost both of the matches and can’t make a place in the final match.
