Melbourne Renegades team is a T20 Men’s cricket franchise in BBL. Melbourne is the capital city of Victoria state of Australia. Docklands Stadium and Kardinia Park are the home ground of the Melbourne Renegades. Here we are going to share the History of the Melbourne Renegades team performance, franchise, Squad, and venue.
Melbourne Renegades Team Franchise
In 2011 Australia Cricket launch its T20 domestic league with the name BBL. Later it was replaced with KFC T20 Big Bash League. In this league, Australia Cricket selects 8 teams from 6 different states of the country. There is no separate owner for every franchise team because Australia Cricket directs all franchises team. Melbourne Renegades is one of them and come into being in 2011.
Australia Cricket decide later to make franchise teams from different cities but this decision was to align its structure with India and South Africa, where their domestic teams are based around the cities. Therefore Australia Cricket Board decided to make two teams from the state of Victoria city Melbourne. Melbourne Renegades Team Performance History
Here we are going to discuss the Renegades team performance during Big Bash League seasons. How many times did they get Champion Trophy and how many times became Runner-up?
2011 to 2013 Season
Andrew McDonald was the captain of The Melbourne Renegades team in the first season. For the 1st season franchise team signed local players and 2 foreign players from Pakistan Shahid Afridi and Abdul Razzaq. In the inaugural season, they won only two matches. They can not qualify for the semi-final round. One against Sydney Thunder and 2nd against Sydney Sixer. Aron Finch became the tournament’s highest run scorer and scored 259 runs. While Shahid Afridi took 10 wickets in 1st season of Big Bash League.
Renegades release some players from the team in the 2nd season of BBL including the captain of the previous season. They picked Muttiah Muralitharan, Ben Rohrer and Peter Nevill. Melbourne Renegades team starts the tournament with an amazing beginning just lost the match against Perth Scorchers. They finished the group stage in the top position. Team Star player Aron Finch hit a wonderful century against Melbourne Stars. He scored 111 on 65 balls. But they lost the match by 15 runs in the semi-final against Brisbane Stars. They could not qualify for the final but finished the season in a better position.
2013 to 2017 Season
Melbourne Renegades has maintained a squad for the team but despite the better players in the squad, they could not play well. They only won 3 games in 3rd season. They can make 6th position in the points table and can not qualify for the finals due to poor performance.
In the 2014-15 season, they were confident to win the tournament of Big Bash League. They signed Mathew Wade and Callum Ferguson for the season. But like the previous season, they can not maintain their balance and lost most matches. In the semi-final, they failed to qualify for the final and finished the season at the bottom position on the points table. Simon Helmet coach of the team was sacked due to the poor run of the team.
David Saker appoints as the new coach for the next season. Renegades pick Cameron White, Chris Gayle, Xavier Doherty, and Sunil Narine. Thisara Perera & Brad Hogg to make strength for the team. These are very experienced players. Renegades finish the season with one step high position in the points table. Like the previous two seasons of Big Bash League, they can not perform well.
2017 to 2019 Season
In this season they signed again inaugural squad players for the team. They start the season in a balanced position. After five years they were successful to qualify for the final. In the group stage, they win 6 matches but lost the semi-final match against Adelaide Strikers by just 1 run. But they qualify for the final match and could not win the title of champion. They finished the season at 3rd position.
In the 2018-2019 season, they play like the previous season. Renegades team lost many great players from the squad and it was a very hard time for them. They finished the group stage in the second position and earn a place in the semi-final. Melbourne Renegades play semi-final match against Sydney Sixers at their home ground. Sydney Sixers set the target of 181 runs Renegades made 148 runs on 6 out and need of 33 runs to get the victory.
They were successful to chase the target of the Sydney team. In the final game, Melbourne Stars win the toss but they choose to field first. Melbourne Renegades make 65 runs in 10.2 overs. Later the wonderful partnership of the Dan Christian and Tom Cooper made 80 runs and set the target of 145 runs for the Melbourne Star team. Melbourne Stars team made 112/7 and Melbourne Renegades win their first Champion title. They get the first BBL trophy for the first time. Dan Christian become the ” Man of the Match” due to hitting 38 runs on 30 balls and taking 2 wickets in four overs.
2019 Season
Andrew McDonald resigned from the coaching of the Renegades team and Michael Klinger become the coach of the team. They signed Pakistan player Usman Shinwari Ashraf. He starts the season match in a poor position. They replaced the Usman with Harry Gurney and Richard Gleeson. Renegades team face many difficulties in the season. They get 8th position in the points table but finish on the season list.
The season of 2020-21 was the same as the previous season. The team win their first match of the season but in the next matches, they could not perform well. Again in this season, they finished at 8th position. In the season of 2022, they again finished at the 8th position. Cameron Boyce took 4 wickets in the season.

Melbourne Renegades Team Venue
Docklands Stadium is the home ground of the Melbourne Renegades. They play their home games in Docklands stadium since the BBL inspection. In the 2016-17 season of the Big Bash League, it was considered the top-rated venue for the T20domestic league. Kardinia Park is the 2nd home ground of the team. They play 2 games in the 2017-18 season in Kardinia Park.
